ants work on making (contiuous tense) new rooms

I know instinctively that the verb 'make' in the sentence below has to be in continuous tense, 'making', but I do not know the reason. I would appreciate your teaching me

    - The worker ants work on making new rooms in their nest.

'Making' is not the continuous tense of the verb here. It's either the present participle or gerund of 'make'.

Those to whom the difference matters will enlighten us further.

Re: ants work on making (contiuous tense) new rooms

'Making' can be seen as a gerund. "The worker ants work on the making of new rooms in their nest."
Gerunds/present participles are not always easily classified. It's a spectrum.

'The worker ants work hard, making new rooms in their nest.'
I consider 'making' a present participle. Am I right or wrong? Not a teacher.

I think the reason for 'making' not being the continuous tense is that it is used after a preposition.

I think 'making' would be the continuous tense if 'work on' was replaced with 'are', but I am not a teacher.

Yes, the main verb is "work on", which is simple present.
