    between a range of items?

    Original Sentence:
Constant sum questions: In this type of question respondents are asked to distribute a given number of marks (points) between a range of items

I am aware that the rigid rule for ESL learners that between (for 2 objects/persons...) and among (for 3 or more) is not set in stone. However, I am not too sure if 'between' is used correctly in the original sentence and whether replacing it with 'among' is also correct. Much obliged if some can explain a bit :) Thanks

Between makes me squirm here. I much prefer among or within for this example and for most like it that I can think of.

'Among' might be best for the above example.

    Here's another case:
"There were several conversations between the five members of the group." This is correct if each conversation occurred between only two members of the group at a time. If all the conversations were among the whole five, then 'among' is correct.

I posted earlier, but my post has disappeared.

I would use "among" there. There are clearly multiple items there.
