    outside a radius of

"Branchspell (a star) sank below the horizon. The gathering mist blotted out everything outside a radius of a few miles. The air grew cool and fresh."

    source: A Voyage to Arcturus

Can you please explain what is meant by "blotted out everything outside a radius of a few miles." Of course I researched the alternative meanings of radius, but still I cannot figure the whole meaning out.
Thank you very much in advance.

    Re: outside a radius of

They could see things in any direction. within a couple miles. Beyond that, the mist made it impossible to see things, in all directions.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
