I consider both correct because 'as soon as' is a time marker, but I am not a teacher.

Both. The pattern of the second sentence is often used in the historic past, i.e. in the Bible, biographies, etc.

I would choose No. 1.
I go by this principle: there is no need to use the past perfect tense when the simple past is clear enough.

They mean the same to me, and I prefer the simple past, but I am not a teacher.
