    is having/has a flu

Timmy is having/has a flu and will have to miss the rehearsal.

In the above sentence, I thought both ‘is having’ and ‘has’ are acceptable. However, I was wrong. I was told that ‘has’ is the answer. I don’t understand the reason behind it.

Kindly help me to understand. Thanks very much!

    NOT A TEACHER

With ailments and other health problems you don't normally use progressive verb forms.

    I must've missed that bit.

Where I live you could also say 'has flu'.
