    why there is no article?

    Hello everyone,
    Could you, please, tell me why there is no article before the word 'President' in the following sentence?

    Was he President after Washington?

    Why there is no a or the before the word President?

    We have free choice in that sentence between no article or the definite article, as we frequently do with 'be' and a role:

    I am (the) King/President/chief executive/headteacher of ...
