    worked or had worked

    Greetings,

First of all, thank you all in advance for your assistance. I am a new comer here and look forward to learning from you all!

I am writing to ask a question on a test designed for English learners. It's a multiple choice.
    Question:
    "Dear Ms. Dinsmore,
This is to serve as a letter of recommendation for Andrew Richardson, a former employee of my company, PT. Inc. Mr. Richardson ------- for my company for three years, from June of 20--until he left to continue his university studies two years ago..."
    A) works B) worked C) has worked D) had worked

My question: My understanding is that answer B or D works perfectly for this passage, depending on one's perspective. The answer from the answer sheet, however, is B. I wonder if I have missed anything. I will appreciate your answer!

    Re: worked or had worked

B and D both work, but the past perfect in D is unnecessary and unnatural. B is the only natural answer.
