Question How is "father"s ending pronounced, with schwa or with /A/ ?

    Hello,

This is my first post here.

I have looked up and found no response to this question that raised with one of my students. I thought both /fAdA/ and /fAde/ where correct, but the dictionary points to schwa, so the second option, not the first one with /A/. Are both correct, just the first one or maybe they are both correct in some dialect?

    Thank you!

I'd use a schwa. (British English speaker)

I have never seen /A/ used for an IPA symbol. Is it the lambda as in 'up'?

I don't deal with phonetic symbols. I am pretty sure that when I pronounce father, it does not end with a schwa.

Click on this link and choose the audios (one AmE and one BrE). My pronunciation is the first one.

I would say that that was a rhoticised schwa. However, it is quite long, and approaches the sound of a rhoticised /ɜ(:)/

I have no idea what that means. Unlike the British pronunciation, there is definitely an R in mine.

that is what I mean by a rhoticised sound.
