    Question gild the lily?

I came across a sentence, but I could not understand it.
"For the beautiful girl to use makeup would be to gild the lily."
Can you tell me the meaning of "gild the lily"?
    Please help me!
    Thank you!

    Re: gild the lily?

    Hello, Peggy.

    Idiom: gild the lily

To adorn unnecessarily something already beautiful.
To make superfluous additions to what is already complete.
