    Broken my leg

Which one of these is correct?
    a) I went to the doctor because I broke my leg VS I went to the doctor because I had broken my leg?
    b) I had broken my leg, and I went to the doctor VS I broke my leg, and went to the doctor?

I believe that going to a doctor and breaking one's leg are not two separate events esp when we use "because", so I should use had.
What about the second one where I removed comma?
    Thanks for help.
