"Working in social media means navigating some tricky waters. Contests that kill one time and flop the next, the all-too-familiar restraint of 140 characters, an angry Facebook comment popping up on the weekend when you’re already a few beers deep…"

I'm not a native English speaker, and I want to understand this introduction into an article, could you please explain the colored phrases?

I am not a teacher.

'Navigating some tricky waters' = Finding your way around/negotiating a complex issue.

'Kill one time and flop the next' = One moment it's a huge success and then it's a big failure.

'When you’re already a few beers deep' = By which time you are relaxing and have already had several drinks (of beer).

Just to add on to Roman's excellent summary - the point being made about the beer is that after a few beers the alcohol may affect your better judgement about responding to what you see on social media.

People don't always make the wisest decisions when they're under the influence of alcohol.

Also - Noriko, please cite the source of your sentence.

I reckon the person meant "constraint" of 140 characters, not "restraint."
