    anecdotes /on-the-spot

Could you please explain what is meant by "anecdotes" and "on-the-spot" in this senetence:

"There are hundreds of paths through the application of 5 Whys, and using recent anecdotes to make on-the-spot calls is a lousy way to make product decisions"

I know that "anecdotes" means a short and interesting stroy, but I didn't understand what the aurthor refers to.

    Re: anecdotes /on-the-spot

Making decisions about the operation of a business ("product decisions") based on stories, as opposed to based on data.

Anecdotal evidence is not necessarily reliable. If you ask a group of engineers they will probably relate to you some of the most recent, or most interesting, stories about your product or how they have dealt with customers and their issues.

Those are anecdotes. They may not be the actual best basis for deciding what product changes to introduce.

This is particularly true in medicine. There are hundreds of herbal remedies and holistic medicines that have no scientific data to support their use. There is nothing more than anecdotal "evidence" and testimonials.
