Re: How to read Woman III?

Titles such as "The third" were traditionally only used by kings and queens. More recently some American families have chosen to use this form of title which, although there is no reason why they shouldn't, sounds a bit odd to BrE speakers who are used to it only being used for royalty.

"Three", in the context of this question about paintings, would be used because when artists produce a series of works on the same theme they will often be called names such as "Woman II" (two), or "Dog Eating Cheese III" (three). The number denotes that in these two examples it was the artist's second picture on the theme of a woman and the third picture by the artist about a dog eating cheese.

Re: How to read Woman III?

There was guy who lived on my dorm floor in college. His name was H. Evan XXXXXX IV. The H was just a letter; it didn't stand for anything. Because everybody in the dorm got a nickname, his was Heaven Four. It was a play on Browning's quote "Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for?"
