which one is correct? (past tense vs. had p.p.)

    Hello teachers,

I think learning to use the right tense isn't always easy for me.

Would you tell me which sentence is grammatically correct?

    1. I ate a lot of candies when I was a little girl.

    2. I had eaten a lot of candies when I was a little girl.

    3. I visited Peru when I was 8 years old.

    4. I had visited Peru when I was 8 years old.

I would use 1 and 3. There is no need for the past perfect in those sentences.

I take it to mean 'I visited Peru before I was 8 years old'.

Then the sentence could be "I visited Peru when I was 7 (or 6 or 5) years old.

I think it is possible to say 'I had already visited many places including Peru when I was 8 years old'.

Re: which one is correct? (past tense vs. had p.p.)

It would be simpler to say "I visited many places, including Peru, before I was 8 years old.

It seems to me that the OP wants to use the past perfect correctly, but you keep using the simple past.
