    The thing is that I said "I told that..." and then had to either rephrase it or to finish it in the correct (even though less common, as you said) way
    Wanted to check (to make sure) that it was correct. I didn't like how it sound, but thought that it is correct.

    The bus is at 6; I told her that. ( a short piece of information)

    The story of Goldilocks? Yes, I told that to her. ( A narrated story)
