I need help about a sentence

    Hello teachers!
    I found a sentence that i couldn't understand.
'Very little was said as we awaited the arrival of the chairman'.
What the 'very little' stands for in this sentence? Does it refer to a child or what? Also I am allways confused about 'as' in grammer.
So unfortunately, I couldn't understand that what does this sentence mean.
    Please help me.

Re: I need help about a sentence

'Hardly anybody spoke during the time we were awaiting the arrival of the chairman.'

Please note that a better title would have been Very little was said.

    Extract from the Posting Guidelines:

'Thread titles should include all or part of the word/phrase being discussed.'

    Hello, UberNova:

Don't feel bad. The little word "as" is used in many ways.

In your sentence, it connects the two parts of your sentence:

Very little was said + as + we awaited the arrival of the chairman.

If the word "as" did not exist, we would have to use two prepositional phrases, something like:

Very little was said + during the time in which + we awaited the arrival of the chairman.

    We could use 'while'.
