    trowers

Here's an excerpt from Melville's Moby Dick:

    - since even in our woollen frocks and tarred trowers we are much better entitled to St. George’s decoration than they

I couldn't find 'trowers' in any dictionary. :( What do you say friends?

    Re: trowers

'Trowsers' may have been acceptable in 1851. Only 'trousers' is acceptable in 2015.

    Re: trowers

It is worse, it is trowers. Now I guess it must be a poor scan.

    Thank you very much.

    Re: trowers

If it's a scan, it could be an error. I have seen trowsers in old texts, but trowers is new to me.

I'm reading it online. Here's a link to chapter 82 that has 'trowers':

    https://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/m/mel...chapter82.html

And this is a link to the same chapter on another site and it says 'trowsers':

    http://etcweb.princeton.edu/batke/moby/moby_082.html

Looks like the first one has been scanned and digitized with an error. Probably it has other errors cause it is not the first time I run into a corner.
