    assess/evaluate

Which of the three words is acceptable, assess, evaluate, or rate?

Though grades is a convenient way to ( assess, evaluate, rate) students, it is by no means a scientific one.

    Re: assess/evaluate

All three words can be used. In your second sentence, I would change the first "is" to "are". I would change the ending to "they are by no means".
