    Motivation letters

    Re: https://www.usingenglish.com/forum/t...-college-essay
Are we going to stop helping posters with letters such as this?
It appears to be more of a motivation letter thing than homework.

I am open-minded and undecided on this.

    Re: Motivation letters

I have not participated in editing motivation letters. The major reason is they are submitted to someone who is going to evaluate the student. But if I edit the letter, they will be evaluating me instead. That does not seem right to me. It is similar to the homework situation.

    Re: Motivation letters

I was hoping that we'd come to a consensus on this. Here's another one:

I'll wait for now to see what comes of this.

I respect Mike's and Piscean's views on this, but I beg to differ. But in any case, I really do think that we should be clear on this issue one way or the other.

I don't think we should help with anything that can suggest to a teacher or person offering a job or university place that our work is the member's own work. This is one reason I don't do such work (the other is that I don't enjoy it). However, if it is forum policy to offer such help, , so be it. BUT:
I really do think that we should be clear on this issue one way or the other.
I agree. Members are receiving mixed messages. It seems to me that some members are having their letters dealt with, others are being told we don't help with such letters.

    Re: Motivation letters

To be honest, I see such letters as more like helping with a CV than doing homework.

Let's take a vote on the issue.

I vote for OK to help.

I vote against. It is cheating.

    Re: Motivation letters

I never do it for the same reasons as Piscean, but would vote against it if pressed, whilst respecting the views of those who disagree.

However, I feel that this straw poll should somehow be brought to the attention of members who, like me, rarely if ever visit this Support Area. I only saw it by accident.

My personal view is that if this is a voting matter, it should be only for people who have been around for a couple of thousand posts over a couple of years. and people like teechar who actually work in that forum. These are the people who have an ethical interest in the matter. If it's open to all, my vote is against.
