    meaning of "cite"

    Dear all,

I'm reading The Versions of Us by Laura Barnett and the meaning of "cite" in the following sentence puzzles me:

"In his final term, he was briefly taken with an extremely pretty first-year history student, but she'd broken it off, citing some old boyfriend from school."

From its context, it seems to mean that she'd go back to her old boyfriend. But I don't think "cite" has the meaning of "go back". And the definitions of "cite" given by the dictionary don't seem to fit in this context quite well. Can anybody explain what "cite" mean here for me?

Having read definition#1 above, I think 'citing some old boyfriend' means 'mentioning some old boyfriend as the reason for the breakup'.
    I am not a teacher.

    Re: meaning of "cite"

It doesn't claim that she broke it off because she wanted to go back to her old boyfriend. She might simply still have feelings for her old boyfriend that conflict with this relationship. Or she might continually feel the pain of having broken up with her old boyfriend, and she's decided she's not ready for a new relationship yet.
All we know is that the old relationship has something to do with her breaking it off.
