Lyric Question. (Smoke gets in your eyes)

Well here is the lyric of famous song 'Smoke gets in your eyes'

They asked me how I knew
    My true love was true
    I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied
They said "someday you'll find all who love are blind"
    When your heart's on fire,
You must realize, smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away,
I am without my love (without my love)
    Now laughing friends deride
    Tears I cannot hide
    So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes
(Smoke gets in your eyes, smoke gets in your eyes)
    Smoke gets in your eyes

Question 1 How does the verb "get" work in "smoke gets in the eyes?" Does it mean 'Taking eyes? Covering eyes? or Having eyes? The meaning is not clear to me.
Question 2 To think they could doubt my love : Does this mean that "I gaily laughed to make them think that they could doubt my love"? or "I gaily laughed because they could doubt my love?" The meaning is not clear.

    Thank you in advance.

Re: Lyric Question. (Smoke gets in your eyes)

If something "gets" in your eye (or any other part of the body), it just means it enters or touches it.

I like bonfires but the smoke always gets in my eyes and makes them water.
I love weddings but the confetti gets in my hair and it takes ages to remove it.
Whenever I make bread, the dough gets all over my hands!
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    1. The verb "gets" there means "enters/affects" Smoke is an irritant.

    2. It means that he could not believe that others would doubt his love for her.

It is a great song, by the way.

And let's not neglect to give full credit to the very talented lyricist — Otto Harbach.

    I am not a teacher.

    We normally say, 'the lyrics'.

Places used to be a lot smokier than they are today, so the image doesn't work as well as it used to.

Re: Lyric Question. (Smoke gets in your eyes)

Well, it's the fact that it's when your heart's on fire that smoke gets in your eyes. It's the smoke from the burning heart. It's a long time since my heart was on fire (though I do get a lot of heartburn these days), but I imagine the sensations are still the same.

Even cigar bars have upgraded ventilation systems.

They are, but I think the analogy is less common.

My heart has never been on fire, thank God.
