Question The adverse effects of remittances would be limited the more the remittances were

I came across following sentence in a book.

The adverse effects of remittances would be limited the more the remittances were legitimate payments for services that contributed to GDP.

I am unable to understand the meaning of this sentence. Is there something wrong in the sentence?

    Re: Sentence

Before we answer your question please give the title and author of the book.

    Re: Sentence

The sentence is from the book titled "The Economic History of India 1857-1947 (3rd ed.)" authored by Tirthankar Roy.

Thank you. What is it that you don't understand?

    Re: Sentence

Speaking of titles, your thread title "sentence" is meaningless. In the future, title your threads more specifically; use actual words from the question.

    Re: Sentence

How many clauses are there? Had the conjunction of the subordinate clause been omitted? What part of speech the word "more"? An adjective or an adverb?

The sentence is flawed. I think the writer means The more remittances were legitimate payments for services that contributed to GDP, the more the adverse effects of them would be limited

That was my understanding of it, too.
