Hello,

Can anybody tell me what the strange word leppings means? I have tried to look it up but in vain ... Besides I do not know what pass for a good step means. Can anybody help me?

"Pass for a good step along the river; cross at the leppings, where the water lies broadest; and when you reach the hill-top eight miles of barren moorland lie before you."

Murray Gilchrist, My Friend, 190?

Thank you very much

I wonder if it derives from, or is somehow related to, "leap." ;-)

Interesting idea. It occured to me it could have something to do with lapping.

You're not alone - the only case I'd heard it before now (because it was much in the news at the time of the Hillsborough disaster) was this.

Exactly right, Bob. Leppings Lane in Sheffield is right next to the River Don. Those of us in the city who know the name well probably never thought about its meaning!
