When the factory was shut down / shut down

When the factory was shut down / shut down, many workers were made redundant.

Personally, I'd go for "the factory shut down" in speech but I'm entirely sure about it.
Please, correct all my mistakes. I should know English perfectly and if you show me my mistakes I will achieve my dream a little bit faster. A lot of thanks.

Not a teacher nor a native speaker.

It depends, for me, on how it closed- was it shut by external or internal factors?
