Looking for a synonym of 'deprived'...

    Hi there,

Would you please give me a synonym which works in a context like the one below?

Ex: Most people are deprived of basic social amenities.

Could the words destitute (adj) or dispossess (verb) be used here? (With a change in structure, of course...)

You could say "Most people are destitute".
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”
