In the third at bat of the first game he doubles.

In the third at bat of the first game he doubles. That hit ties the record. (Baseball's Best: Five True Stories)

What is the third at bat of the first game? What does ties the record mean?
    I need native speakers' help.

Re: In the third at bat of the first game he doubles.

It's about baseball. The third time he got a chance to hit the ball (be "at bat") in the game.

"The first game" must mean there was a second game. Baseball players sometimes play two games in one day. It's called a "doubleheader."

Which word do you not understand in "tie the record?"

What kind of record does it refer to? What does tie mean?

A record. An accomplishment. Probably most doubles (in a season, in a career, by someone on that team, etc.) Tied means he has the same number as the person who previously held the record.

Re: In the third at bat of the first game he doubles.

It's slightly confusing - it's not clear if it was his third time at bat during the game, or if he was the third person at bat (the third person to bat) when he made the record tying hit.

    I'm guessing the latter.

It was his third time at bat. (He had had two previous at bats that game.) Also, it was probably the first game of a series.
