    present participle

Hello, I would like to understand ,what does "Ing" symbolize here?

Shmuel (Shmulik) Shilo was born in Lutsk, Poland, to a Zionist family. In August 1942, in the midst of World War II, most of the Jews of Lutsk were murdered. Shmuel managed to escape, hiding for several months with a Polish family

I know that its a present participle but there are some categories of present participle: like present progressive, past progressive or progressive generally.
In this sentence hiding has the same meaning like "was hiding". So is it Abbreviation?

If it has the same meaning but its still not the same, can you give me an article? I haven't found this yet, I have found other types of present participle(sub-categories).

    Thanks.

    Re: present participle

I consider 'hiding' to be a present participle modifying 'Shmuel'.

    Re: present participle

Yes, I know his story, this is in Hebrew so its not a matter of misunderstanding.
I just want to know: When present participle like this(hiding) can be used? what are the cases of putting this? I didn't see any article that talks about this particular "ing".

    Thanks.

    Re: present participle

    Two questions please:
    1. Why is it written in the present tense? (hid/hiding), the holocaust happened in 1939-1945. Not now.
    2. So, Does always "ing" like this sentence have the same meaning of the present simple?

    Thanks

    Re: present participle

Although the -ing form is known as the present participle, it has nothing really to do with present time. The time/tense is shown by finite verbs in the sentence.

He is hiding with a Polish family.
He was hiding with a Polish family.
He had been hiding with a Polish family.

He is in Krakow, hiding with a Polish family.
He was in Krakow, hiding with a Polish family.
He had been in Krakow, hiding with a Polish family.

I guess there is still a typo after your typo correction.

    Re: present participle

According to my understanding, this ing would need to be: tense(was)+ing but the writer wanted to shorten the line, so he deleted it.
Here, the sentence would need to be "was+hiding" but the writer has wanted to omit it. Am I right?
