    explain vs explains

What is it what explain/explains the way they are?

Is the question grammatical and if so, how the verb "explain" should be conjugated in it?
I'm not a teacher and I'm not a native speaker of English.

    Re: explain vs explains

It is third person, so explains.

What is it that explains the way they are?
