I think "enough" is the direct object of the verb "did", which would make it a noun, not an adverb.

yes , i think so too.it's noun in " ……did enough" this sentence, not adj to modify the elliptical noun "work" .;-)

What are the rules for word order with 'enough'?
;-)

enough + noun :

e.g. enough time , enough money

adjective + enough:

good enough , tall enough, large enough

e.g. In this climate it`s not warm enough to go out without a jumper at night.
I don`t have enough money to buy that car.

can u show me the difference beween "enough" and "adequate", I meant, in which cases we use enough, and how about "adequate"? :?:

"Adequate" is close in meaning to "enough" and "sufficient". It shows that something is good enough or large enough for a particular purpose:

e.g.
His computer skills were adequate for the type of work required of him.

The negative form of "adequate" is "inadequate", while for 'enough" we have to use "not".
e.g.
We don`t have enough milk for coffee. It`s not enough.
