1 Mark Twain decided to ——— because his parents wouldn't let him get a job on the river.
2 The steamboatmen ——— and discharge freight at each port on the Mississippi River.
Which of the following phrasal verbs can be put in the blanks of the above questions?
Turn up, run away, go away, wake up, get on, take in, fade out, lay up, break down, turn back.
(Diane Larsen-Freeman, Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching, Second Edition, page 14)

My answers are as follows:1. run away2. take in
Can any native speakers tell me the correct answers?

    2. should be "take on".
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

It seems to me that they would unload freight, not discharge it.
