I found following sentence in the book titled 'Confabulation: Views from Neuroscience, Psychiatry, Psychology, and Philosophy' authored by William Hirstein.

When asked, how they arrived at this solution, no one mentioned Maier's shoulder brushing act.

If I write above sentence as following, can it be wrong?

When asked, how did they arrive at this solution, no one mentioned Maier's shoulder brushing act.

Thank you.

If I write the above sentence as [STRIKE]following[/STRIKE] follows, can it be wrong (is it correct/wrong)?

When asked(,) how [STRIKE]did [/STRIKE]they arrived at [STRIKE]this[/STRIKE] the solution, no one mentioned Maier's shoulder brushing act.

The question form is: ...how did they arrive.. (verb comes before subject)
The statement form is: ...how they arrived.. (verb comes after subject)
In reported speech, "this" becomes "the".

The commas after 'asked' are incorrect in both versions.

I would say 'Is it wrong to rewrite the above sentence as follows?'
