    To V / Gerund (subject)

    1. To watch TV is his hobby.
    2. Watching TV is his hobby.
    3. It is his hobby to watch TV.
    4. It is his hobby watching TV.
How about the acceptability of the above sentences?
    I need native speakers' help.

Re: To V / Gerund (subject)

#4 is incorrect. Out of the remaining three sentences, #2 is the best. However, you can simply say:
    His hobby is watching TV.

    5. To watch TV is fun.
    6. Watching TV is fun.
    7. It is fun to watch TV.
    8. It is fun watching TV.

What about the acceptability of sentences 5-8?

Re: To V / Gerund (subject)

    4. It is his hobby watching TV.
    8. It is fun watching TV.
#4 and #8 seem to have the same structure. How come $8 is correct but #4 is incorrect?

Re: To V / Gerund (subject)

Is this because 'fun' is an adjective while 'hobby' is a noun?

Re: To V / Gerund (subject)

"It's fun watching TV" is possible.
I note that this was asked verbatim twelve years ago; see below:

... and eight years ago; see below:

I consider this disingenuous conduct by sitifan.

I look forward to Rover_KE or one of our other moderators to finish eating that Christmas pudding and stick a sturdy padlock on this thread.

Wow! Very impressive investigative work there, teechar!

Before we close this thread, let's give sitifan an opportunity to explain why he/she is wasting our time and to tell us why we should take his/her questions seriously in the future.

Re: To V / Gerund (subject)

In any case, watching TV isn"t much of a hobby.
