    it turned out

    Can one use:
    1) When they started to make the movie, they claimed that they were going to try to give us a new Philip Marlowe, one we had never seen. In the end, it turned out the same old Philip Marlowe.
    instead of:
    2) When they started to make the movie, they claimed that they were going to try to give us a new Philip Marlowe, one we had never seen. In the end, it turned out to be the same old Philip Marlowe.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR.

    No.

    Re: it turned out

You could say in the end, they turned out the same old Philip Marlowe.

    Re: it turned out

It is a weak promise to say you are going to try to do something.

    Re: it turned out

They both seem natural and correct to me. I would have thought the first was more BrE and the second more Ame, but in view of the earlier responses I would be delighted to be corrected.

    Re: it turned out

The first one is not natural BrE. I would say that it's ungrammatical.
