    Help with comma usage

Having recently struggled with the placement of commas during the composition of a short essay, I would be grateful for a little advice regarding its usage.

Whilst composing the following sentence, I'm really at a loss as to which, if any, are gramatically correct:

"Prior to playing an installed compendium it must first be designated the current selection as illustrated within the procedure below."

"Prior to playing an installed compendium, it must first be designated the current selection as illustrated within the procedure below."

"Prior to playing an installed compendium it must first be designated the current selection, as illustrated within the procedure below."

"Prior to playing an installed compendium, it must first be designated the current selection, as illustrated within the procedure below."

As all of the above sound "reasonable" when read aloud, I would be grateful for any advice regarding this somewhat irritating dilema.

    Re: Help with comma usage

I don't understand any of them. How does one "play an installed compendium". What is this an instruction for?
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: Help with comma usage

I am not sure about what the sentence means, but would probably use the 4th for punctuation as it stands.
