It is correct. "Selection" appears to mean his acceptance into the program.

George has dreamed of becoming an astronaut since he saw the movie ďApollo 13Ē. But he didnít make it because he had a car accident the week before his selection.
-Is this sentence correct? What does the selection here mean? Thanks!
How about the week before he was due to be selected/up for selection, as I presume they would not have selected him if he had been hospitalised or injured.
