You can gain some inspiration from a group of students who were instructed to make monthly plans about when, where and what they would study. These students earned better grades than those who meticulously planned on a daily basis, and, if they chose to abandon planning altogether, did so much later than the daily planners.

Could you explain the meaning of the bold-faced phrase?

It looks like a typo for "did so much better ..."

What does "if they chose to abandon planning altogether" want to say?
Does it mean "no planning at all"?

It means that that the one group abandoned planning considerably later than the other group.

It could possibly mean that. Unfortunately, the link given doesn't link to anything relevant.
The difficulty I have with the original reading is that it implies that some sort of inspiration can be gained from one group abandoning a plan much later than another group.
So, the question still remains: What does this mean in a pragmatic sense?

If I understand the book correctly, willpower supply is limited. So with the daily planners group they have to take a lot of time and energy to get the complete plan. However, while doing so the willpower also consumes and decreases rapidly resulting abandoning planning early than the other group.

Planning is good?

I think so but daily planning is time and willpower consuming.
