    2. I would prefer my coffee black.
    Is there any difference in meaning between the above sentences?

    #1 is stating a fact and is the usual way of saying that.
    #2 is tentative.

    I usually prefer my coffee cold, but today I'd prefer it hot.

    I've just made the sentence above.
    Would it sound OK if I said "... but today I prefer ..."?

    I couldn't say it is wrong, but I prefer the "I'd" form.
