We live in a strange world. In an age where likes are currency, connecting with others and sharing our lives seems to be our number one priority. Yet we’re more distrustful than ever.

What is the meaning of "likes" here? Thanks.

Facebook or other social media likes. Like the "Like" button on this very web site.

And likes can be seen as currency because they make a webpage more valuable as it is more likely to be shown to people searching- a popular page gets more attention than a less popular one.

One of our regular posters here frequently (and amusingly) says "I am paid in Likes". He/she usually writes it when someone has failed to click "Like" on one of his/her posts that it appears the person has found helpful.
