    Re: Beer belly

I would say that "beer belly" is almost a "slang" term in its own right. It's certainly colloquial and informal.

As the moderator told us, "beer belly" is a slang term.

I believe that the proper term is paunch ( = a protruding abdomen).

Here are some other slang terms for a paunch:

    a. spare tire
    b. potbelly
    c. sugar belly (too much sugar from ice cream, pastries, soda, etc. I'm trying to get rid of mine -- although I have just polished off a slice of cheesecake).

    Re: Beer belly

"Beer gut" (used in BrE) is perhaps a little more "slang" than "beer belly" but there's not much difference.

    Re: Beer belly

Beer gut is also common in AmE.

    Re: Beer belly

You have other slang terms like spare tyre/tire or muffin top for fat around the waist, but they don't necessarily suggest that beer is the cause. I'd stick with beer belly/gut.
