    confer on him the " habit of Christ"

    Hi!
    What is the exact meaning of the following sentences? I mean the words printed in bold. I had guessed something, but I am not sure. This passage is from a book about the Spaniards in east Asia ca. 400 years ago.

    He had petitioned the King to confer on him the " habit of Christ" in reward for his many services.

    To confer something on somebody is to give that person something. (A title, for example.)
