let him verify who list (2)

    Hi!

In the following passage the sentence printed in bold is ambiguous. The text is from footnote of a Spanish book written nearly 400 years ago, and translated into English in 1902.

In the passage referred to, "Chatin" is mentioned as a style of certain merchants or tradesmen, the modern " chetties'' of the Madras Presidency ; and they are described, with rather less probability, as governing Canara as a Republic. The truth was, doubtless, that the city had a strong municipal administration, extending a little way outside the gates. But the "commonwealth" is also mentioned by Faria y Sousa: at least he is quoted to that effect, in both editions of the Imperial Gazetteer — let him verify who list.

    Thanks very much

Why did you start a fresh thread for this? You could have added the extra information to the original. Now you have two threads running on the same question.

I think it means Anyone who wishes to do so should verify this.

The archaic verb list means to wish or to choose.
