What is the exact meaning of the words printed in bold? The text is from a book written 400 years ago in Spanish and translated nearly 115 years ago into English. The underlined words are Spanish. The words "matical" and "maund" are units of weights in Middle Esat. Mão is the Spanish pronunciation of maund.
We learn that at Hormuz (in 1554) rhubarb was sold by mãos da tara (i.e. maunds with a tare or allowance), each mão having a picota, or additional allowance, of 28 Hormuz maticals.
Thanks very much
Maund was not standardised, tare weight is the unladen weight of a container, but as the maund unit could vary considerably, it's difficult to have any idea of the amount being discussed.
