An excess of a loosened rope should be kept in an orderly manner ... to pull it in by

    Hello everybody!

An excess of a loosened rope should be kept in an orderly manner in a way that enables the vessel’s crew to pull it in by hand.

A workmate of mine explained to me that "when a rope passes through the ship's chock in the side and is led to a fixed point on deck, it should not be left lying loosely because a crewmember could catch his foot on it and fall over or experience other injuries.

That's why I would like to ask you to help me decide which sentence is better.

    1. An excess of a loosened rope should be kept in an orderly manner in a way that enables the vessel’s crew to pull it in by hand.
    2. An excess of a loosened rope should be kept as short as possible so as to enable the vessel’s crew to pull it in/heave it in by hand.

    Thank you.

Specialists might know better, but the phrase excess of loosened rope doesn't work for me.

The loose part of a rope is called a slack.
How about: The slack on a rope should be neatly kept to facilitate easy handling?
    I am not a teacher.

Slack is a good word, though I would say that it should be kept tidy or neatly.
