    Participle phrases and postmodifier

    Hi there.
''I've spent the whole day shopping.'' & ''I paid the book using a credit card.''
Both shopping and using are modifying the subject ''I''.

    What about this sentence?
''The robber gave the teller a note demanding $1000.''

Can ''demanding $1000'' modify the subject ''The robber''? Or it is a postmodifier of ''note''?

    Here is my own example:
I have a chance going to Germany.

Can ''going'' modify the subject ''I''?

    Re: Participle phrases and postmodifier

In your first two sentences, neither -ing word modifies the subject. I consider both of them to be adverbial.

In your third sentence, it is a postmodifier of "note" -- an object complement.

In your fourth sentence, "going" should be "to go". It modifies the noun "chance".

    Re: Participle phrases and postmodifier

But, I am told that participle phrases are always modifying a noun, isn't it true?
