he couldn't have avoided being drafted

If he hadn't enrolled at university, he couldn't have avoided being drafted. / he would have been drafted.

Does this sentence sound natural to you?

    This is natural.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”

If he hadn't enrolled at university, he wouldn't have been able to avoid being drafted.
    or
If he hadn't enrolled at university, he wouldn't have been able to avoid the draft.
    or much better,
If he hadn't enrolled at university, he would have been drafted.
