    expendable configuration

    Hello, everybody!

Talking about about rockets, what's the meaning of word expendable here?

So the trick is to try to shift that from say two-three percent in an expendable configuration, put them to make the rocket mass efficiency, engine efficiency and so forth so much better that it moves to around maybe 3.5 or 4% in an expendable configuration. Dictionaries don't help much, so I'm counting a lot on your ideas. Thank you!

Have you not seen a launch of a rocket which abandons stages after the fuel contained within has been burned up?

    Re: expendable configuration

Expendable is the opposite of re-usable in this context. Expendable rocket stages are dumped into the ocean and not salvaged after their single use.

    Re: expendable configuration

To amplify a little: all booster rockets from the beginning of the space age to the present have been expendable except for two which the SpaceX company has tested very recently.

The NASA space shuttle boosters are re-usable.

I did not know that. It makes sense, though, as the (unrealized) mission of the space shuttles was to make space travel relatively cheap.
