    Let us remember all those who have gone before (us), and have left us their example of Christian living.(Longman Dictionary of Phrasal Verbs)

    Since example is a countable noun, why not say their examples of Christian living?

    "example" suggests one group or community of people, all of whom lived the same kind of life (in the relevant respects). "examples" suggests more variety.
