both a sense of vision in life and the struggle to

What is the impact on the spirit when we stop learning? The conscience first becomes numbed, then dulled, and finally silenced, because it constantly tells us to learn and to grow. We lose both a sense of vision in life and the struggle to find our voice, both of which are primary sources of our passion in life.
    (The 8th Habit; S. Covey)

Would you be so kind as to tell me whether it should be read as 'We lose both a sense of vision in life and [a sense of] the struggle to find our voice [...]'?

    Thanks.

Re: both a sense of vision in life and the struggle to

That sentence is not written particularly well. I would phrase it like this:
We would lose both our perspective in life and the struggle ... etc.

The sentence is not ungrammatical as written, though I agree it's clumsy. It says that we lose a sense of vision in life, and that we lose the struggle to find our voice.

    Thank you teechar and GoesStation!

But how do you know exactly that it is not '[a sense of] the struggle'?

    Thanks.

We lose both a sense of vision in life and the struggle to find our voice, both of which are primary sources of our passion in life.

The sentence is not a model of clarity. My interpretation seems more likely because a sense of the struggle to find our voice is too complicated a thought to phrase that way.
