    sent them there to....

    Are these sentences correct:
    1) They sent him to Italy to not be in danger.
    2) They sent him to Italy not to be in danger.
Meaning: They sent him to Italy so that he would not be in danger.

    3) They did not send him to England, to learn Italian.

Meaning: In order that he would learn Italian, they did not send him to England.

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    2) They sent him to Italy not to be in danger. -- No, this doesn't work.
Meaning: They sent him to Italy so that he would not be in danger. -- This is the best.

    3) They did not send him to England, to learn Italian.
-- No, this sounds like he went to England, but for some reason other than learning Italian, with a weird comma thrown in. "They didn't send him to England, because they wanted him to learn Italian." Or "They sent him to Italy, not England, so he could learn Italian."
Meaning: In order that he would learn Italian, they did not send him to England.

    .
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
