    membrane worlds in onion-layer stacks

Less than a century before, in Mortlake, Edward Kelley and JohnDee stoop to their labours. Eager breath fogs on the scrying glass. From the black mirror, spirits gesture and describe the myriad Ethyrs, brilliant countries, membrane worlds in onion-layer stacks andpopulous with radiant children, lion-heads, wise monsters. Place andentity emerge from nonsense, gibberish, from the Enochian tongue's elaborate invented twin-speak.

Introduction to A Voyage of Arcturus by Alan Moore

Can you please explain what the writer means by membrane worlds in onion-layer stacks? I couldn't find any connection between these words and the mediums Edward Kelley and John Dee, or any other medium. Also, who are radiant children?
note: Enochian is a name often applied to an occult or angelic language recorded in the private journals of John Dee and his colleague Edward Kelley in late 16th-century England)
    Thank you in advance.

Re: membrane worlds in onion-layer stacks

If you cut an onion in half, you will see that it is made up of layers. The writer is making an analogy between the layers of an onion and the different worlds or realities overlaying one another.
